Crime Map Considerations.

Cindy Angelo - Vice President, Northwest Security Coordinators

The Crime Map is an excellent way to educate the public about criminal activity in this area. But, the people who read it must also remember, this is a tool and not everything is as written on the Crime Map. This map is for information only and should not hinder the Real Estate community or anyone else from buying or selling a home. This map’s intentions are positive, but remember that there are also considerations to remember, such as:

Not all calls take place in the subdivision, but resident(s) may wait until they get home to call the police i.e., stolen purse or car from the store. Many people wait until they get home to report a crime. Unfortunately, their address will be the one on the map since that is where the report has been made by the officer.

A few residential burglaries that occur in subdivisions or apartments may be committed by relatives - i.e., divorce or their own child.

On Subdivision Newsletters that may report their stats to the residents:

Disturbances can be anything to a party, fighting, loud noise, barking dog calls.

Thefts can be stealing shrubs, bikes, planter boxes, wreaths off doors.

I can’t emphasize enough to the resident that when I put the information from the monthly stats in our newsletter, this is information and some of the numbers may not be what they seem.

I see these tools (Crime Map and Newsletter) as information and to give us a general idea of what is happening in our area so we can better protect and be alert in our everyday activities. We should not be disillusioned by these stats every week, but look at it as a tool to help us and our community be stronger against criminal activity where we live. I think the FM 1960 area is doing a fantastic job in educating the community and has stayed on top of it. The Northwest Chamber of Commerce Crime Awareness Committee has been a major part of this venture and works hard to continue. ***
