National Night Out is August 6, 2002

The object of National Night Out is to get neighbors to step outside of their home and join forces against crime. Neighbors knowing neighbors is the first step in community crime prevention.

We live in "bedroom communities" and often do not know who lives next door to us. Our parents and grandparents knew everyone for miles around.

It is never too early to start planning National Night Out. Each Coordinator handles NNO at their own discretion.

Northwest Park goes all out with marching band, parade, hot dogs, booths set up for vendors and information centers, plus all the bells and whistles that Harris County Sheriff's department has to offer.

In Northwest Park NNO is a social occasion that Dora Young starts working on in August for the following year. She has managed to pull off one of the most successful NNO in Harris County.

On the other hand, Carriage Lane usually purchases watermelons from Hempstead and encourages neighbors to have Watermelon Block Parties so neighbors can meet the neighbors in their block and exchange telephone numbers for both work and home.

The end result of each of these National Night Out's is to get neighbors to step outside, lock their door, meet their neighbors and be aware of Crime Prevention.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do for National Night Out, Tuesday August 6th.
