Harris County Sheriff’s Department
Crime Prevention Unit- Plans National Night Out

National Night Out - Tuesday, August 3, 1999.   Mark this date on your calendar and start planning now to help alert your residents to this important date in our fight against crime.  National Night Out was founded in 1983 by Matt Peskin of Wynnewood, Pa and has grown to become recognized in all 50 states.

The purpose of National Night Out is to unite communities and neighborhoods against crime.  Many citizens are becoming filled with fear from increasing crime and retaliation.  A feeling of hopelessness and eventually indifference begin to prevail, prohibiting us from making positive changes in our environment.  It is possible to begin uniting the people for the common cause of making the neighborhood a safer place to live, work, and play.

National Night Out is an opportunity to effect a change, and it only takes one person to begin.  Do you care enough to begin the process?  Our neighbors may feel the same way, but we will not know unless we step outside and meet them.  Together we can utilize resources designed to assist in reclaiming our neighborhoods.  For the most part, it takes little courage to make the effort to meet someone new.  It is neighbors meeting neighbors, working together to make neighborhoods safer by watching out for each other.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Department has deputies waiting for your call to help implement a National Night Out Program in your community.  Call 713-759-9454.  There are many suggestions available that communities can do to help celebrate this year’s National Night Out, here are but a few.  Purchase watermelons for each block in your subdivision so each block can hold a block party, encourage residents to plan their own block get-together with a barbecue or perhaps making ice cream by hand with lots of toppings for young and old alike.   Some subdivisions have crime information booths set up at their club house and serve hot dogs, soft drinks, and chips.  Believe me, if food is available people will come out and socialize.  Be creative and think of what you can suggestion or plan for your subdivision.  This truly can be a lot of fun and a great way to meet your neighbors.

Be sure to call the Crime Prevention Unit to let them know of your plans so they can make sure and have a couple of Sheriff’s Deputies stop by to meet your residents.
