Defensive Jogging & Walking
Reprinted from the Winchester Trail Writer, February
1999.
Here are a few safety guidelines for joggers and walkers.
-
If possible, jog or walk with a companion or with a dog.
-
Jog or walk relaxed but always be aware of your surroundings.
-
Create a “safety area” around yourself within which no one should enter.
If someone comes too close, move away.
-
Know the area in which you jog or walk. Have several emergency escape
routes.
-
Note where public telephones and police call boxes are located.
-
Jog or walk in well-lit areas. Wear reflective clothing when it is
dark.
-
Avoid jogging or walking near dense foliage or places from which you could
be set upon without warning.
-
Do not wear expensive jewelry or carry money (except for phone change).
-
Do not wear a stereo headset. You will not be able to hear approaching
traffic, people or dogs.
-
Dress modestly.
-
Carry or wear some ID.
-
Walk or jog facing on coming traffic if you must use the street.
