False Alarms
You Can Make A Difference!

False alarms. They can happen to anyone and when they do, it is almost like dialing

9-1-1.

Those in law enforcement are here to help you prevent false alarms. By working with law enforcement, you can have a great impact on securing your homes, businesses, and communities.

First, make sure your security system is properly activated and if you accidentally set off your alarm, understand how to easily cancel the alarm.

You can eliminate virtually all false alarms by following a few simple procedures.

  1. Simply educate each person who has the responsibility of activating and deactivating your security system. Anyone who has a key to your door should be trained. Make sure everyone knows their code number and code word as well as how to cancel a false alarm.

  1. Check all doors and windows before activating the alarm. Make sure your doors and windows are closed and locked, even if they are not monitored by your security system.

  1. Treat your alarm system with care. Routine maintenance can greatly reduce false alarms. Be sure that before you test your system, you notify your alarm company. Then request that they confirm your alarm system is working properly.

  1. Remember that motion detectors can detect movement of people, pets, plants, balloons, curtains, and other movable decorations. Check and make sure that air currents do no cause movement of these items in the area that is covered by a motion detector.

  1. Keep your emergency contact list up to date. Inform your alarm monitoring company of any changes you make.

If you have questions about alarm permits and what is required, contact your local law enforcement agency’s alarm detail office.
